How do I move PCLaw (Windows) Version 2 to another Computer?

  1. Determine the location of your PCLaw PROGRAM and DATA files.
To determine the location of your PCLaw PROGRAM and DATA files:
    • Start PCLaw.
    • Click the Help pull-down menu.
    • Click About PCLaw.
    • Hold down the Ctrl key and the Shift key on your keyboard while you click Tech Support.
    • On the Alumni Computer Group Data Directory Dump window, the location of your programs is listed to the right of the word PROGRAM:. Write down this path. THIS IS YOUR PROGRAM DIRECTORY.
    • On the Alumni Computer Group Data Directory Dump window, the location of your data is listed to the right of the word JOURNALS:. Write down this path, excluding the \JS\ found at the end of the path.
    • For example, if the location of the journals is shown as C:\PCLAWWIN\DATA\JS\, then the location of your data files is C:\PCLAWWIN\DATA. THIS IS YOUR DATA DIRECTORY.
  1. Make sure no one is running PCLaw.
  1. Copy the PROGRAM directory (determined from Step 1) and its contents, including all subdirectories, from the old computer to the new computer (or backup this directory and restore it to the new computer).
  2. Copy the DATA directory (determined from Step 1) and its contents, including all subdirectories, from the old computer to the new computer (or backup this directory and restore it to the new computer)
Note: With many installations, the DATA directory is a subdirectory of the PROGRAM directory. If this is the case, it is not necessary to copy the DATA directory a second time.
  1. Run the Setup program:
    • Select File and then Run from the Windows Program Manager. (If you are running Windows 95/98 or NT, click Start and then Run.)
    • Type pclawpath\setup (where pclawpath represents the location of your PROGRAM FILES).
    • Click OK.
    • Read the welcome message and click OK to continue.
    • On the Book Selection window, select ATTACH AN EXISTING SET OF BOOKS. Click OK.
    • Select the drive on which to install the PCLaw program files or accept the default location. Click OK. (With networks, PCLaw executes faster when the programs are installed on the local workstation.)
    • Type the name of the subdirectory in which you want to install the PCLaw program files, or accept the default. Click OK.
    • Select the drive letter of the PCLaw data files on the new computer. Click OK.
    • Select the location of the data files where you copied your data in Step 4. Click OK.
    • If Setup determines that your CONFIG.SYS file needs updating, you see a window informing you which changes should be made. Respond Yes to have the necessary changes made automatically. Respond No to leave your CONFIG.SYS file intact for now. You should make these changes manually when Setup is complete.
    • The final window informs you that the installation process is complete. Click OK to return to the Windows Program Manager.

CAUTION: Do not remove your original PCLaw until you have verified that the program is working correctly with current data on the new computer.
